MUJI Opens Store in Santa Monica

MUJI, the Japanese lifestyle brand, will open its second store in the greater Los Angeles area June 20 when it opens MUJI Santa Monica.

MUJI Santa Monica is designed to serve as a local haven for customers seeking a wide array of products that are rooted in a simple aesthetic. According to the company, MUJI products aspire toward modesty, making them adaptable in terms of style and accessible in terms of price while also emphasizing production and packaging that reduces waste.

The 6,300-square-foot Santa Monica store will offer a diverse but carefully edited product range, including kitchenware, tableware, furniture, interior and storage accessories, stationery, skincare, apparel, and travel items.

“MUJI offers products that customers often rely on every day, so we feel it’s important for our stores to be nearby to serve their daily needs,” said Asako Shimazaki, president of MUJI USA Ltd.

He said MUJI views Santa Monica “as a place that has many sides – nature, city, refinement, culture – and sees the people there as having lifestyles rich with experience.”

MUJI has California stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose, and five stores in New York, including a MUJI to Go shop at JFK International Airport. MUJI also has stores throughout Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

MUJI derives its name from the original Japanese name mujirushi ryohin, which means “no branding, good products.” MUJI started in Japan in 1980 and now has more than 400 stores.
