Beginning on July 17th 2015, Herrell’s Ice Cream will introduce 2 new ice cream flavors, Baklava and Moroccan Mint Tea ice creams. Both flavors are Middle Eastern favorites. Baklava a nut, honey, cinnamon encased in filo dough treat (our ice cream does not contain the filo) creating a flavorful sweet combination and is often eaten as a dessert, while Moroccan Mint Tea is made using gunmetal green tea, spearmint leaves and sugar making a delicious steeped sweet and relaxing tea drink. Each flavor is unique and makes a wonderful ice cream flavor.
An Islamic holiday, Ramadan celebrates the month when the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The word Ramadan means scorching heat or dryness and according to Islamic historians, the Qur’an was revealed during a time when the Islamic community was not connecting with God and souls were filled with dryness. The Qur’an was said to revive the spirits of the Muslim people.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sun up to sunset. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and it is believed to binds you to god. At sundown, the religious observance of Iftar begins, where people will gather and break their fast often together as a community. They eat modestly, only enough to sustain themselves.
After Ramadan ends, there is a three day joyous celebration called Eid Al Fitr also known as the Sugar Feast. It is during this breaking fast celebration when Herrell’s plans to respectfully offers our new and festive flavors with a sweet Middle Eastern zouq (Arabic for taste).
‘Our business and personal principles guide us to embrace the religious and cultural differences we have in our community. Herrell’s is a good place for everyone to come and enjoy regardless of differences. All are welcomed’, according to Judy Herrell!
