Better Bean Co. Achieves B Corp Status

The Better Bean Co., a pioneer of refrigerated beans, has become a Certified Benefit Corporation (B Corp). The designation is awarded to companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems, and meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

“From the beginning, we were committed to using the highest-quality natural and organic non-GMO ingredients sourced within our region,” said Better Bean’s founder, Keith Kullberg. “We create positive relationships with our employees, vendors and customers, and offer them a level of transparency that speaks to our common goal of creating social change and producing a tasty and healthy product.”

Company co-owners Keith and Hannah Kullberg started their company with the purpose of inspiring people to rethink beans. Better Beans are vegan, gluten-free, Non-GMO Project Verified and feature regionally grown organic and Food Alliance-Certified beans. The all-natural ingredients are slow-cooked by hand, sautéed for rich flavor and packaged to seal in the fresh flavors.

B Corporations are the next stage of fair trade. Just as fair trade seeks to establish positive relationships with suppliers, B Corporations seek mutually beneficial relationships with all of their stakeholders.

To become a Certified B Corp, The Better Bean Co. was evaluated by B Lab, the nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations, and determines the company and products meet the comprehensive performance standards to qualify for certification. Unlike traditional corporations that make decisions primarily for the benefit of their shareholders, Certified B Corporations consider the impact of their decisions on all their stakeholders, including their consumers, employees, shareholders, suppliers, community and environment.

“We strive to educate our consumers and employees on social and health issues so they can join Better Bean in making conscious decisions that will affect our wider community,” said Hannah Kullberg. “We are proud to be a member of the growing community of businesses committed to conscientious and sustainable growth.”

The Better Bean Co. joins the ranks of other social and environmental business leaders in the marketplace, including more than 650 Certified B Corporations from 60 industries in the consulting, consumer packaged goods, solar energy and legal sectors representing a diverse multibillion-dollar marketplace.
