146 Purveyors Recognized With Good Food Awards

The Good Food Awards celebrate tasty, authentic and responsibly produced items, granting awards to outstanding American food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients. 

The awards were given out Jan. 10 at the annual Awards Ceremony and Marketplace at the Ferry Building in San Francisco before a crowd of about 800 people that included chefs, journalists, farmers, activists and food crafters.  Author Mark Bittman, the keynote speaker, was joined by other luminaries such as Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl and Nell Newman.

In their fifth year, the Good Food Awards are given to winners in 11 categories: beer, charcuterie, cheese, chocolate, coffee, confections, pickles, preserves, spirits, oil and, the newest category, honey. Awards were given to producers and their food communities from each of the five regions of the United States. The Good Food Awards Seal, found on winning products, assures consumers they have found something exceptionally delicious that also supports sustainability and social good.

Chosen from 1,462 entrants, there were 146 companies from 33 states recognized for creating vibrant, delicious, sustainable local food economies. The products were subjected to a blind tasting by a panel of 182 judges in September. The highest scoring entries were then submitted to a rigorous vetting process to verify that they met the sustainability and social responsibility criteria to win a Good Food award.

Founder Sarah Weiner, in her closing remarks, said, “Wed to a vision of a better, more delicious world, all of you have chosen to be creators. Beyond the not trifling feat of making something utterly delicious, what you do and the way you do it creates tighter, stronger, more just societies.”
